England boss Gareth Southgate calls for nation to unite once more to fight coronavirus pandemic

England manager Gareth Southgate has delivered a rousing call for the nation to work together again in the fight against coronavirus.

Southgate's message comes after a trio of his players breached Covid regulations when Ben Chilwell and Jadon Sancho attended a surprise birthday party for Chelsea's Tammy Abraham, attended by more than the limit of six people.

Prime minister Boris Johnson has recently criticised people for not following social distancing guidelines and restrictions, with a number of areas being placed in local lockdown as cases rise.

After a number of high-profile breaches from footballers to politicians, Southgate has called on the nation to come together once more, as was the case during the early months of the pandemic.

"We're living in really unique times with the Covid regulations and everybody from politicians to footballers and businessmen have erred within that field," said Southgate.

"I think as a country in terms of fighting the virus we need to get a little bit back on track of working together. I felt really positive about us at the beginning of lockdown. Everybody was out, supporting the NHS, people were doing shopping for their neighbours. Everyone was pulling together.

“There is a lot of disharmony now and we are all in this situation together and I think we've got to work together to pull through it as a country."
