England battle past Norway as Argentina beat 10-man Switzerland in World Cup quarterfinals

Thomas Tuchel's England side are through to the World Cup semifinals following a 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway in Miami on Saturday.

Norway took the lead late in the first half when what looked to be a cross from Andreas Schjelderup deceived Jordan Pickford, dipping over the England goalkeeper and flying in off the post.

England responded quickly, however, with midfielder Jude Bellingham adding to his impressive goal tally for the tournament with a cool left-footed finish just before the interval.

Tuchel made a number of changes at half-time, bringing off Noni Madueke and Declan Rice, who had both struggled in the opening 45 minutes, and replacing them with Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze.

It was Norway, however, who seized the momentum in the second half and looked the more likely team to score.

They were unlucky not to do so after Torbjørn Heggem had a goal ruled out for an Erling Haaland shove on Elliot Anderson, and they saw another header cleared after hitting the bar.

The game eventually dragged on into extra time, and England took the lead in the 93rd minute when Bellingham reacted quickest to turn home a rebound from an Ørjan Nyland save.

England then looked to have had a good shout for a penalty when Djed Spence was brought down in the box after a fine run, but the referee controversially overturned his decision following a VAR review, leaving England fans furious.

But England were able to see out the game with some solid defending as a spirited Norway side also began to fade.

Tuchel's side will go on to face Argentina in the semifinals in Atlanta on Wednesday. The winners of that tie will play either Spain or France in the World Cup final.

Lionel Messi's Argentina squeezed past Switzerland in their quarterfinal match in Kansas City.

Liverpool forward Alexis Mac Allister headed the Argentines in front early in the game, but Switzerland equalised through Dan Ndoye in the 67th minute.

The Swiss went down to 10 men shortly after, when striker Breel Embolo received a second yellow card for a dive.

Argentina sealed the victory in extra time with a fine curling effort from Julián Alvarez in the 112th minute before Lautaro Martínez made it 3-1 to finish off the game.
