England assistant Steve Borthwick to join Leicester Tigers as head coach

England assistant Steve Borthwick will join Leicester Tigers as their new head coach at the end of the season.

The RFU confirmed on Monday that Borthwick, who is England’s skills coach for the upcoming Six Nations after being in charge of the forwards for the previous four years, was set to leave before the summer tour to Japan.

Leicester have now confirmed that the 40-year-old will be joining them to work under Geordan Murphy, who has been appointed as the club’s director of rugby.

Murphy’s move into his new role follows a year as head coach at the struggling club where he won eight Premiership titles and back-to-back European Cups as a player.

Borthwick said: “The last four-and-a-half years working with the England team has been an incredible journey.

“I have worked with some brilliant players and staff. In particular, I would like to thank Eddie Jones.

"To have worked with one of the greatest head coaches in the world has been an unbelievable experience. It is a brilliant challenge and I am excited to start.”
