England and Lions coach Graham Rowntree emerges as leading contender to be new Dragons boss

England World Cup winner Graham Rowntree has emerged as a leading contender to be the next Dragons head coach.

The Gwent region have been in search of a "world class" replacement after sacking Bernard Jackman in December, and it is understood Rowntree is one of four candidates the Dragons are considering.

Rowntree brings a wealth of experience as a coach, having spent eight years with England as forwards coach under Stuart Lancaster.

And he has been involved in three consecutive British and Irish Lions tours in 2009, 2013 and 2017 - working alongside Wales coach Warren Gatland each time.

Having also held coaching positions at Leicester Tigers and Harlequins, Rowntree is currently plotting Wales' downfall as Georgia's forwards coach for their 2019 World Cup campaign.

Wales coaching trio Shaun Edwards, Rob Howley and Robin McBryde are all understood to be on the radar of the region as well.

Dragons chairman David Buttress promised to find the perfect man for the job after dispensing with Jackman's services less than 18 months into his three-year deal.

And Rowntree would certainly seem a strong potential appointment - despite being part of Stuart Lancaster's England coaching set-up that failed to get the host country out of their 2015 World Cup pool.

Forwards coach Ceri Jones took over from Jackman as interim coach, being given the reins until the end of the season after Wales defence guru Edwards had pulled out of taking the job on a temporary basis.

And it is understood, if the Dragons were to appoint a coach involved in this year's World Cup, Jones would carry on as interim coach until the end of the tournament.

The region are aiming to make an appointment before their final PRO14 fixture of the season against the Scarlets on Judgement Day on April 27.
