England 45-7 USA: Much-changed England side bag seven tries in rampant one-sided contest

England made America wait again as they thrashed the 14-man Eagles by seven tries to one in Kobe.

The rugby minnows had dreamed of a first win in six attempts against England but lacked the power to combat England’s marauding forwards.

Captain George Ford opened the floodgates with his side’s first try before Billy Vunipola, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Joe Cokanasiga (2), Ruaridh McConnochie and Lewis Ludlam joined the try spree.

The Americans did manage a consolation try from replacement Bryce Campbell but their night will be remembered for John Quill becoming the first player in the tournament to be sent off.

The flanker could have no complaints after planting his shoulder into Owen Farrell’s jaw and sparking a brief brawl.

England had made the perfect start when pulling the Eagles one way then the other until Ford spotted a chink in the defensive line and was through in a flash.

Only five minutes had gone but already the US had suffered a major blow with the loss of young loosehead prop David Ainuu to injury at the first scrum.

To their credit they responded stoutly as England’s indiscipline reared it’s ugly head, conceding four penalties in the opening quarter.

But just as frustration threatened to get the better of them Vunipola stepped up to settle them down with a trademark surge of power.

England turned down a shot at the sticks to go for the corner and from the lineout the big number eight was driven over.

America had no answer to England’s forward cohesion so captain Ford called for more of the same.

Cowan-Dickie again threw in to the set-piece but this time regathered the touch back and had his second try in as many World Cup games.

A 19-0 lead at half-time enabled Jones to give Vunipola and his two props the second half off but there was no respite for their battle-weary opponents.

The forwards continued to pour on the power and Ford expertly milked the open spaces, setting up tries for Bath wing duo Joe Cokanasiga and  Ruaridh McConnochie.

Both came with assists by Jonathan Joseph, the first an absolute beauty to spin out of traffic.

Cokanasiga added his second before Quill saw red 10 minutes from time.
