Joe Hart 5
Had little of note to do during the regulation 90 minutes but must be held accountable for Russia’s equaliser in injury time. His positioning was terrible, his reaction too slow
Kyle Walker 8
Very impressive when bombarding forward, teaming up well with Lallana and giving Georgi Schennikov a torrid time. Like the rest of the back four, had very little defending to do until the end
Gary Cahill 7
Marshalled Russia’s beanpole striker Artem Dzyuba well, the highlight being an impressive interception on the edge of the six-yard box early in the second half. Steady throughout
Chris Smalling 7
Similar to Cahill, he handled Dzyuba without much bother and also had a great chance when rising to head a Kane corner 11 minutes in, only to direct the effort straight at Igor Akinfeev
Danny Rose 6
Not as prominent as Walker but displayed a similar will to get forward when possible. Unsurprisingly outjumped by Vasili Berezutski for the late, heartbreaking equaliser
Eric Dier 8
The goal is what will be remembered for years to come but it must be noted that he executed his more recognised duties excellently. Is he Hodgson’s most irreplaceable player?
Wayne Rooney 7
A little speculative with his passing at times but went close entering the final 20 minutes, denied by a stupendous save from Akinfeev. It is worth persisting with him in the deeper role
Dele Alli 7
Showed flashes of excitement, with a wonderful move late in the first half standing out. Backed into a corner, he danced his way through three red shirts before finding Rooney
Adam Lallana 7
Epitomised England’s high-tempo gameplan early and had the first clear attempt when shooting at Akinfeev. As with a lot of Liverpool performances, he faded as the match wore on
Harry Kane 6
Worked hard without fashioning any really good chance for himself. A tad harsh that his most lasting impact was the dummy for Dier’s free-kick. Also, why is he taking corners?
Raheem Sterling 6
The system suited him but there was very little end product. Unfortunate to miscue his first touch when in a glorious position early in second half. Most at risk to be dropped for Wales
SUBSTITUTES
Jack Wilshere 6 (for Rooney, 77)
Showed a couple of decent touches
James Milner n/a (for Sterling, 77)
Not on long enough to be rated
