England 1-0 Portugal: How Roy Hodgson’s team rated before Euro 2016

Jamie Vardy will struggle to have any impact on Euro 2016 unless England fins a way of releasing him early behind opposition defences.

Joe Hart 6

A bystander throughout but that will not trouble the Manchester City man. England’s undisputed No1 will have been pleased by the defensive solidity in front of him

Kyle Walker 8

Put England on the front foot early with his eagerness to win the ball and fly forward. Unleashed one sweet drive and guaranteed his starting spot ahead of Clyne

Gary Cahill 7

Chosen ahead of Stones for his greater dependability and did little to change Hodgson’s mind. Strong last-ditch tackle and powerful attacking header showed his worth

Chris Smalling 6

Rose well to angle his header into the net and save England’s blushes against 10 men. Now a mainstay in a back four that at least looks to be settled for the opening game

Danny Rose 6

Showed his speed will be an asset in defence but the presence of Alli and Vardy ahead of him on the left cramped his space to roam until a formation switch in the second half

Eric Dier 7

Assured and positionally aware against the land of his upbringing, he also looked good in possession and confident enough to shoot. England have finally found a holding player

James Milner 5

Old warhorse always seems to get the nod come tournament time. Provided grit but little else to a forward-thinking side and will feel Wilshere and Henderson at his back

Dele Alli 6

Clever movement unsettled Portugal and showcased his sublime first touch. Got frustrated at times but there are signs he will link well with Rooney between the lines

Wayne Rooney 7

Saw lots of the ball in a free role off the front and burst into the box to test Patrício. Offers a high-quality presence and ended the debate about whether he should be dropped for Vardy

Jamie Vardy 5

Forced to track back on the left and his threat was stifled by England’s slow buildup play. Needs to be released early in behind but none of the midfielders seem to be looking for that

Harry Kane 5

Lucky to escape unharmed from Alves’s karate-style assault and almost immediately forced a save. Quiet but one terrible corner exhibited the folly of him taking the set pieces

Substitutes

Sterling (for Vardy, 66), ran at his full-back and gave England a new ball-carrying point of attack;

Wilshere (for Milner, 66), added quick feet and a subtlety of pass which will give Hodgson food for thought;

Sturridge (for Kane, 78); Lallana (for Rooney, 78); Henderson (for Alli, 90)
