Engineers unveil robotic hand that can handle a pringle or raspberry

  • Engineers at the University of Texas at Austin have unveiled a robotic hand, named FORTE, capable of handling delicate items such as crisps and raspberries without causing damage.
  • The technology, which stands for Fragile Object Grasping with Tactile Sensing, represents a significant step towards creating robots with human-like dexterity.
  • Inspired by the fin-ray effect, the robotic fingers feature internal air channels that function as tactile sensors, detecting pressure changes to determine the necessary gripping force.
  • During testing, the FORTE system achieved a 91.9 per cent success rate in single-trial grasping experiments and an unrivalled 100 per cent accuracy in identifying slip events.
  • This breakthrough holds the potential to revolutionise household robotics and various industries, including healthcare and manufacturing, by enabling robots to perform fine and delicate movements.
