Engineers carrying out morning survey at Cumberland Road - results expected this afternoon

The extent of damage and cost of repairs to the collapsed footpath alongside Cumberland Road should become clearer with the results of an inspection being given to council leaders today.

Engineers are this morning carrying out a morning survey of the embankment which fell into the River Avon on Friday (January 24). Once the council has been informed, a public statement is expected to go out.

On Friday, Bristol City Council said that the road would be closed for the 'foreseeable future.'

At the weekend, cabinet member for transport Kye Dudd warned people that the road is likely to remain closed 'into next week.'

Chocolate path crumbles into the river

He told Bristol Live: "It is likely the road will remain closed into next week whilst these investigations take place and work is carried out to make sure the site is safe.

"I want to reassure residents and businesses that there are no immediate issues for them to be concerned about and we will provide a further update once investigations are complete."

Cumberland Road river bank collapse

Engineers on the ground are assessing the situation this morning and the council is expected to announce the results of this morning's survey this afternoon.

The Chocolate Path and harbour railway closed back in 2017 because of an underground landslip which council chiefs had allocated millions of pounds to repair.

Following the closure of Cumberland Road, it's unclear how the collapse of the river bank will affect the council's long-term plans for the redevelopment of the harbour railway in the area.
