A jobs fair is set to take place for Rolls-Royce workers in Derby who are affected by thousands of job cuts being implemented by the engineering giant.
Last summer, the firm, which has its Civil Aerospace and Defence divisions in the city, announced it was to shed 4,600 jobs, including 3,000 in Derby.
Since then the firm has been slashing thousands of middle management and back office positions at its Civil Aerospace site in Sinfin in order to save the company around £400 million a year by the end of 2020.
At the time, the company said that it planned to cut 1,000 jobs at Derby in 2018, another 1,000 in 2019 and further 1,000 by mid-2020.
At the start of this year, Rolls-Royce, which is Derby’s largest private sector employer, said that its plans to cut jobs would “gain further momentum” this year.
Since the cuts were announced Rolls-Royce has been working with local organisations to help affected staff find alternative employment.
To this end, the firm will be hosting a jobs fair at the Rolls Royce Leisure Centre, in Moor Lane, on September 26, with companies involved in the engineering sector encouraged to sign up.
Partners involved include local authorities, training providers, educational institutions, engineering-related alliances and networks, the Department of Work and Pensions, East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and the Talent Retention Solution programme.
The event is being promoted by the D2N2 Growth Hub. In a statement, it said: “The jobs fair will help find alternative employment for Rolls-Royce employees who have shown an interest in other local opportunities as a consequence of workforce restructuring reductions.
“For employers, this is an excellent opportunity to identify potential new employees with very strong skillsets in a variety of engineering and management disciplines.
“Employer support during this redeployment initiative to retain local talent within Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and across the Midlands is greatly appreciated.”
