Engineering firm crowned Business of the Year at 2020 Chamber Awards

An engineering firm which works with companies across the world has been named the Greater Birmingham Business of the Year.

Tamworth-based Excitation Engineering Services was founded in 2011 and works with the power generation industry to provide commissioning and maintenance support and general consultancy in the field of excitation control systems.

It has also provided training to global companies and supported projects across the world.

It won the international trade category at the 2020 Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce Awards tonight before being chosen from all the winners as the overall business of the year.

The event, which was held online because of the coronavirus restrictions, celebrated business achievement across 12 different categories.

Helen Bates, chairwoman of the judging panel and the chamber's chief financial officer, said: "Excitation Engineering Services is a great example of a Midlands-based company making an impact across the world.

"They have expanded their activities from consultancy to design and manufacture, using UK suppliers, and they have achieved this by investing in staff training and development as well as sponsoring local engineering undergraduates."

Other winners on the night were law firm Gateley, which took home two awards, and Newlife, the disabled children's charity which won the retail category in recognition of its work improving the lives of more than 20,000 disabled and terminally ill children across the UK.

The 2020 President's Award was given to Jaguar Land Rover.

Steve Allen praised the car manufacturer's role in the development of electric and autonomous vehicles as well as its work making PPE at the start of the coronavirus crisis.

He said: "The company remains at the heart of the region's supply chains supporting around 260,000 UK jobs through its service providers, supply chain, R&D partners and own employees.

"Innovation is at the heart of what they do as they continue to invest in their UK manufacturing operations.

"I am proud that this innovative company is based here in the Midlands and this award is a recognition of its continued development and contribution to the region's economy."

The digital ceremony, which was streamed on the chamber's website, was hosted by Heart FM presenter Ed James with entertainment from poet Casey Bailey and Aston Performing Arts Academy.
