EnergyAustralia to plead guilty to three charges related to death of worker Graeme Edwards

Yallourn Power Station operator EnergyAustralia says it will enter a guilty plea in the Latrobe Valley Magistrates' Court to three charges relating to the death of a unit controller in November 2018.

Graeme Edwards, 54, died in the Alfred Hospital a day after he was badly burnt in an electrical short circuit while reinstalling a high voltage circuit breaker at the station.

Mr Edwards had worked at the station for 30 years.

WorkSafe pressed charges in December last year in relation to breaches of the Occupation Health and Safety Act by the operator.

An internal company investigation found Mr Edwards was doing his job exactly as he had been trained to do.

EnergyAustralia chief operating officer Liz Westcott said in a statement released on Wednesday the company had conducted a review of circuit breakers and electrical hazards since the incident and had updated equipment.

"We've made numerous safety improvements at Yallourn Power Station since this tragedy in 2018," she said.

The matter returns to the Latrobe Valley Magistrates' Court for a committal mention in June.

"We have always said that Graeme performed the racking procedure as he had been trained to do.

She said his death had a profound impact on his family, his workmates, the community and EnergyAustralia.

"We cannot fully express how sorry we are."
