Energy Secretary Andrea Leadsom set to announce key nuclear plant decision this month

Energy Secretary Andrea Leadsom is set to announce a key new nuclear decision this month.

The Secretary of State will decide if the £12bn Wylfa Newydd nuclear project on Anglesey has secured its Development Consent Order.

The nuclear project is currently suspended after Hitachi put it on hold in January after they failed to reach a funding agreement with the UK Government.

But they continued to press on with the planning application and there are hopes a positive result will give fresh impetus to funding discussions.

The announcement is now expected by October 23.

Horizon Nuclear Power, Hitachi’s vehicle for the nuclear scheme, said: “We anticipate that the Secretary for State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy will announce their decision on our Development Consent Order by the end of October of this year.

“The decision will be based upon a recommendation that’s been delivered by the Planning Inspectorate following a rigorous and independent process that lasted almost two years.

“The decision will heavily influence how the Wylfa Newydd project progresses.

“Whilst the project remains in suspension, a positive decision to grant our DCO would enable us to understand the conditions placed upon the project should the correct conditions for a restart be met.”

Ynys Mon MP Albert Owen says a positive result would give a boost to the whole scheme, although funding remained key.

Mr Owen, who is also a member of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy committee, said: “This is an important juncture for the project - a positive outcome makes this project easier to sell.”

BEIS confirmed they were still working towards the October 23 date.
