Energy Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan sets out her priorities in new role

Northumberland MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan has set out her key priorities in her new role as an Energy Minister, including driving forward developments in offshore wind and other renewable energy technologies.

Mrs Trevelyan, MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, was speaking to representatives of energy businesses. She said she expects to see significant progress made over the next two years on tackling climate change and the Government’s Energy White Paper.

This includes having a fully operational Carbon Capture, Usage and Storage (CCUS) project by the mid-2020s and for the UK to be producing 5GW of low carbon hydrogen by 2030.

More immediately, the minister said she will be focused on preparing to introduce new legislation to enable competitive bidding in the building, ownership and operation of the onshore electricity network.

Over the next few months, she will publish plans for heat and buildings, industrial decarbonisation and hydrogen, revealing how the Government will reduce emissions in these sectors.

This is in addition to publishing the Government’s overall strategy to deliver net zero emissions by 2050 ahead of the UN climate change summit COP 26 in Glasgow later this year.

Mrs Trevelyan said: "We must be more sustainable and more efficient. Ensuring the consumer is part of this revolution and able to harness their own part in the global picture is going to be so important."
