
China makes breakthrough in key material for ‘artificial sun’
Chinese researchers have achieved the domestic industrial-scale production of a key material for controlled nuclear-fusion reactors, popularly known as “artificial suns.” A team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Metal Research successfully developed high-purity, ton-level quantities of a Hastelloy (C276) metal substrate used in second-generation high-temperature superconducting tapes, CCTV News reported.
BYD Unseats Tesla as Hong Kong’s Top-Selling EV Brand
BYD Co. Ltd. has unseated Tesla Inc. as Hong Kong’s top-selling electric-vehicle brand, marking a significant shift in a market once dominated by the U.S. automaker. The Chinese carmaker recorded 936 new vehicle registrations in September, according to data from the city’s Transport Department. Electric cars dominate Hong Kong’s private-vehicle market, accounting for nearly 76% of all new registrations in September with 3,542 units, up about 95% year-on-year.
National power use to grow 5% in 2025
China’s total electricity consumption is projected to grow by about 5% in 2025 to around 10.4 trillion kilowatt-hours, with fourth-quarter growth expected to outpace the third, the China Electricity Council said in a report. In the first three quarters of the year, national power consumption rose 4.6% year-on-year to 7.77 trillion kilowatt-hours.
Goldwind aims for one-third of sales from overseas within five years
Goldwind Science & Technology Co. Ltd. expects overseas markets to contribute one-third of its total sales within the next five years, up from 29.4% in the first half of 2025, a company vice president said. The wind-turbine giant said its overseas business has grown at an average annual rate of about 50% over the past five years.
World’s highest-dam pumped-storage plant fully operational
The Jurong pumped-storage power station in Jiangsu province, which features the world’s tallest dam for such a facility at 182.3 meters, is now fully operational. The plant has a total installed capacity of 1.35 million kilowatts and is expected to generate 1.35 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, according to State Grid.
China proposes first mandatory national standard for e-bike chargers
China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has released draft mandatory national standards for the safety of electric-bicycle charging stations, marking the country’s first such regulation. The move aims to mitigate fire risks associated with e-bike charging. The draft is open for public comment.
Ganfeng Lithium returns to profitability
Ganfeng Lithium Group Co. Ltd. (002460.SZ) reported a net profit of 25.5 million yuan ($3.5 million) for the first three quarters of 2025, returning to profitability from a loss in the same period last year. For the third quarter, net profit surged 364% year-on-year to 557 million yuan on revenue of 6.2 billion yuan.
State Grid general manager moves to SASAC
Pang Xiaogang, general manager of State Grid Corp. of China, has been appointed a deputy director of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC). Pang, 53, took the helm at State Grid in June 2024 after previously holding various positions at China Southern Power Grid Co. Ltd.
