Energy experts' warning over heating mistake that can add to bills - with easy fix

As the UK continues to face a cost of living crisis, many Brits are attempting to cut their bills where they can.

When it comes to heating, this is will prove incredibly hard during the winter when temperatures start to plunge.

That being said, energy experts believe there are things you can do at home to reduce your energy bills without having to turn off your heating entirely.

According to experts at Utility Bidder, one of the main mistakes Brits make at home when it comes to their heating is placing furniture in front of the radiator.

This might be the most convenient placement, but when it comes to saving money, it's doing you no favours.

The experts said: "To use as little energy as possible, make sure there are no items of furniture such as a sofa in front of the radiator, as this will soak up the majority of the heat."

Instead, you need to leave the radiators exposed so it can heat the whole room, and not just be blocked by the furniture, causing you to need to use more heat to reach the whole room.

There are also other tricks you can incorporate into your daily life in the hope of heating your home for longer without seeing energy bills increase drastically.

As well as furniture, make sure curtains aren't placed in front of the radiator as this will block it. Instead, make sure the radiator is exposed.

You should also make use of daylight – even though it may feel like there isn't much of it. Open all your curtains and blinds fully during the daytime so the sun can heat your home.

When you shower, you'll have noticed that the steam left in your bathroom afterwards produces heat.

The experts recommend leaving the bathroom door open so that the steam can heat some of the surrounding areas.

Lastly, try to make sure there aren't any drafts coming into your home, as this can bring cold in air and let warm air out.

Find any doors or windows that let in a draft, and put a draft excluder at the bottom. Don't forget about pet flaps and letter boxes.
