Energy expert's tips on how to keep your home warm without switching heating on

An energy expert has given tips on how to keep your home warm without switching on the heating.

Fears over rising energy bills means it is vital to keep homes warm while trying to save cash.

And there are many things you can do without putting the heating on.

Energy expert Kevin Pratt has given his top tips to help families keep warm without turning on the radiators.

He advised families to block any draughts which are coming from around doors, windows, letterboxes and even keyholes to reduce cold.

Kevin said: “Dig out that sausage dog draught excluder and use balled socks or tights where needed.”

Windows can also be upgraded to maintain heat without it costing a lot of money.

This is an DIY job according to the expert at Forbes Advisor. He said: “Double- or even triple-glazing is a brilliant way to keep out the cold and to retain warmth in your home.

“If you don’t have it, consider a DIY solution where you use a hair-dryer to stick plastic film inside your windows - there are kits online for around £20.”

If families have an open fireplace, much of the heat will escape up the chimney.

This can be prevented using a chimney balloon which plugs the air passage.

It can be bought for between £15 and £25, but the expert did warn people about removing it if they want to light a fire.

He also advises about spending cash on some cosy rugs instead of having bare floor boards which can allow draughts to seep into a room.

Kevin said: “Putting rugs down will help, and you can also buy gap-filler kits for £10 and upwards. Makes a huge difference.”

Another easy away to keep your house warm without switching on the heating is to be aware of how much heat each room uses.

“If you have an unused room in your home - even if only on a temporary basis while someone is away at university - then turn the radiator fully off and close the door,"

“It won’t matter so much if this room gets cold, and you can focus on keeping the rest of the property toasty.”

Wearing warmer clothes is an easy way keep warm at home.

This means tiurning on the heating can be delayed.

The expert added: “Think layers. And remember that, if your feet are cold, you’ll feel cold all over - so invest in thermal socks and a decent pair of slippers.”

Dominick Sandford, director of ElectricalDirect, said insulating your home and can be done just by keeping the warm inside and not letting it escape.

He said: “With gas prices soaring, it is understandable that consumers are seeking alternative home heating solutions."
