Energy crisis package: Will we still get the government's £400 bill rebate?

It was announced in the House of Commons on Thursday (September 8) that a major multi-billion-pound government package would be implemented to help tackle the energy crisis. Following the announcement, news that a “two year energy price guarantee” would be actioned meant that households could expect energy bills to be frozen at £2,500 for two years.

But what about the previous energy bill help announced as part of the cost of living support package earlier in the year? The question on the lips of many householders is: 'will we still get the £400 bill rebate promised?'

The good news is that all households will still be in line for the £400 winter fuel payment previously announced by the government. This discount will still be paid and comes in addition to the price freeze.

Administered by energy suppliers, the government says that millions of household across the UK will receive non-repayable discounts on their bills. Payments will be made in six instalments throughout the winter period starting from October. A discount of £66 will be applied to energy bills in October and November, rising to £67 each month from December through to March 2023.

Those with a domestic electricity meter point paying for their energy via standard credit, payment card and direct debit will receive an automatic deduction to their bills. Traditional prepayment meter customers will be provided with energy bill discount vouchers in the first week of each month, issued via text message, email or post, using the customer’s registered contact details. These customers will need to take action to redeem these at their usual top-up point, such as their nearest local PayPoint or Post Office branch.
