Energy crisis: Government says it will announce details of business support scheme next week - and says help will be backdated

The Government says more details on its planned support scheme for businesses struggling with energy bills will be released next week - and says support would be backdated if the scheme is delayed.

Liz Truss last week said businesses would get help with soaring energy costs but said details would come later. The Government is set to hold an emergency "fiscal event" within days to unveil plans to help businesses, households and public sector bodies.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said today: "We will confirm further details of the business support scheme next week.

"The scheme will support businesses with their October energy bills and that includes through backdating if necessary."

According to the PA news agency, Downing Street said it “recognises” concern from businesses about soaring energy bills and a lack of clarity on planned support for them, as opposed to support for households where a cap has been announced.

Business support could require some form of new legislation.

The PM's official spokesman said on Wednesday that the Government had been speaking to energy companies and businesses to provide “reassurance” about the promised help.

They said: "We did recognise there is concern about the support but what we are saying is that we will be providing the support to cover their October bills.

“We’re still working through exactly whether it will need legislation".
