Energy bills to increase by £50 million for UK households

Nearly half a million UK households could see their energy bills rise by £50 million.

The data comes from comparison service Uswitch who found that 90 fixed deals from 19 energy suppliers end this month.

For 486,559 households an average price hike of £103 could be avoided if they switch to a cheaper plan, but customers with deals ending at Ovo Energy, npower and British Gas could see increases of £269, £174 and £168.

Those who don't move to a cheaper deal will likely be rolled onto their current supplier's default tariff, which Uswitch says are 'among the worst value energy plans on the market'.

For example if you're with Ovo Energy, a two-year fixed energy tariff at £856 could be ending and you would be rolled to the new price of £1,125 or with British Gas from £952 to £1,120.

If you switch you could save up to £404 - the widest gap between the cheapest deal and the price cap for seven months - which hasn't been this big of a gap since July 2019.

Some of the cheapest buys for fixed tariffs come from Outfox the Market at £757.95, Tonik Energy at £776.21 and Yorkshire Energy at £791.93.

Energy customers can use the Uswitch online guide to find out if your deal is ending soon and compare the best deals to switch to.
