I am extremely proud of our country's public services and of the talented people who work in them. The Guardian Public Services Awards are a good way of celebrating their achievements and I am pleased to have the chance to offer my endorsement.
Modern, world-class public services are vital to the success of our country – whether it's the schools and universities that educate and train the workforce of the future, or the doctors and nurses that keep people healthy, active and making the most of their lives.
These awards shine a light on some of the creativity and innovation that we need to transform our public services. So I'm particularly keen to see examples of staff taking on the challenges and coming up with new, more effective ways of working to make services more local, accountable and personal, such as taking control of their organisations by setting up mutuals or cooperatives.
