
A masked actor topples about 1,000 plates at the climax of "Horakuwari," a popular play performed during this year's Mibu Kyogen spring event at Mibudera temple in Kyoto on Sunday. Mibu Kyogen -- designated an important intangible folk culture asset -- is said to have been started by the Buddhist monk Engaku during the Kamakura period (late 12th century to early 14th century) to spread Buddhist teachings. The performances have no lines and are acted solely through gestures. The event runs until Saturday.
