Avengers: Endgame box office breaks records – New Marvel movie achieves biggest opening night in film history

Avengers: Endgame has achieved the biggest ever opening night at the international box office, managing a superhuman $60m (£46m).

According to ComicBook, the film has surpassed the efforts of previous record holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which managed $57m (£44m) in 2015.

Endgame was expected to be a huge hit, but the film has already surpassed estimations — early projections predicted that the movie would take $43m (£33m).

The film would make box office history over the next few days if it becomes the first movie ever to make $300m (£231m) in its opening weekend. The last Avengers movie, Infinity War, currently holds the record with $257m (£198m).

The success comes despite the fact that a copy of the film leaked onto online piracy sites, following the opening night in China. Fans are also being urged by the studio not so share spoilers.

The film picks up after the catastrophic events of Avengers: Infinity War, which saw the MCU decimated by Thanos’s snap. Read out guide to the superheroes who lived and died in the film here.

Avengers: Endgame is available to see in UK cinemas now.
