Enda Stevens enjoying his career highs because he remembers the lows too well

Enda Stevens is enjoying his career highs because he remembers the lows only too well.

The Ireland and Sheffield United star is this week lending his support to a Mental Health awareness campaign in the Premier League.

And he is urging anyone who may be struggling with their mental health to speak out.

“That is crucial, especially with men as you have that bravado to think you can deal with everything yourself,” he said.

"But that has got better over the last few years. "There are more and more people being open about things and there are plenty of people who can help you.”

Stevens admits he has felt low at times in his career.

"There is a lot of disappointment in football and you probably have more lows than highs,” he continued.

"That's why you appreciate the highs and the road you took to get there.

"In Ireland, I joined Shamrock Rovers and it didn't really go for me at first as I was left out of squads and was sitting in the stands.

"I couldn't get a game and it was affecting me. It was the same thing with Aston Villa and I couldn't get a loan deal.

"You don't feel involved. You're left at home on weekends when the lads are going off to play in these big games and it gets to you.

"But you come out the other side and that’s why I feel that the success I've had recently is there to be enjoyed.

"Then it just clicks and you build on it. You go through some bad times, some dark times but trust me, you will always overcome it.”

According to Stevens, daily exercise is helping him get through the monotony of the Covid-19 crisis.

"It's been tough and you’re up and down,” he said. “We’re all looking forward to getting some positivity back and hopefully it’s not too far away.”
