'End of an era': Scotland's 'biggest free Hogmanay concert' scrapped for good

A CELEBRATION once billed as Scotland's biggest free Hogmanay concert has been scrapped due to funding.

Inverness' Red Hot Highland Fling drew crowds of around 10,000 people before tickets and capacity restrictions were introduced in 2023.

Founded in 2008, the Highland city hosted the public Hogmanay event, which was held every year at the Northern Meeting Park, on the city's Riverside.

However, the event did not go ahead last year due to funding and capacity issues.

The Highland Council announced this week that the once hugely popular event has now been cancelled permanently.

The Inverness Events and Festivals Working Group had both confirmed that the city's common good fund could no longer support and run the event, the local authority said in the announcement.

“Sadly, we have come to the end of an era of the Red Hot Highland Fling Hogmanay Event,” Inverness provost Glynis Sinclair said.

“It is with regret that we confirm that this major event in the Inverness Events and Festivals programme will no longer feature on the winter festival calendar of events.”

The Inverness Events and Festivals Working Group had worked with hospitality businesses to try and come up with a new event, Sinclair said.

She added: “Unfortunately, no proposals were forthcoming and therefore there is no longer the justification to invest funds from the Inverness Common Good Fund into a Hogmanay event.”
