'End of an era': Last pub left on Bristol estate demolished

The last pub left standing on a Bristol estate has been bulldozed to make way for housing.

Builders have knocked down the Golden Bottle in Lockleaze, and have permission to build seven houses and two flats in its place.

It had been the last pub to close on the estate back in 2018, having served drinkers for decades since it opened in the late 1950s.

The nearby Gainsborough pub closed in 2011 and was partially destroyed in a massive fire last year.

Bristol City Council is still considering compulsory purchase of the site as part of wider redevelopment plans.

Images of the Golden Bottle being demolished were shared on the Love Lockleaze group on Facebook earlier this week.

One woman said it was the "end of an era," as neighbours swapped memories of their visits there.

The no-frills pub in Constable Road had a darts board, a pool table and fruit machines, and had been boarded up since its closure.

Bristol City Council approved plans in April, for the demolition of the building and erection of seven three-bedroom houses, one five-bedroom shared flat and one three-bedroom flat in its place.

An earlier application for 10 houses on the site had been refused.

The applicant is listed as Golden Bottle Ltd, which was incorporated according to Companies House in April 2017.

Their application stated: "The premises has been subject to a significant marketing exercise... this was unsuccessful at securing a new tenant for the public house.

"The pub continues to be unviable and that there are other options within the near vicinity of the site for the community purposes and as drinking establishments.

"There would be no harm to the social well-being of the local community through the loss of the site as a public house."

The application noted that the new Lockleaze sports centre has a bar, which is about a 15-minute walk away from the pub site.

Council officers wrote in their report about the plan: "It is considered that the existing site, being the last remaining public house in the area, contributes significantly to the diversity of community facilities in the locality.

"It is subsequently considered that the loss of the public house would create a shortfall in the provision or quality of such uses (public houses) within the locality."

However, they still recommended it for approval.

More details about the landscaping of the site were submitted to the council in June, and gained approval on August 13.
