End of an era: Kearsley social club to close permanently after 127 years

A social club where people have met for 127 years is to close permanently, it has been confirmed.

The owners of Kearsley Social Club made the announcement to their customers via social media.

They described the closure as the “end of an era” and thanked those who have visited the club over the years.

In a post, the social club said: “Just a quick update for everyone to let you all know the decision has been made to close permanently.

“We would like to thank all our customers who have supported us over the many years, old and new, young and old, it's the end of an era!

“From management and staff, thank you and good bye, take care everyone.”

Last month, Manchester Evening News reported that the venue, built in 1892 in Manchester Road, could be demolished to make way for an apartment block with 24 flats.

The rest of the land would be used for a car park, with 21 spaces for resident parking.

The developers put in a planning application outlining its proposals, confirming the flats would be affordable and run by social housing operator Bolton at Home if successful.

The developer's plans include a mix of five two-bedroom flats and 19 one-bedroom flats.

Watson Homes says these are the kinds of houses 'most-needed by Kearsley residents'.

The plans are now set to be discussed by Bolton Council's planning committee.

The owner of Kearsley Social Club has been contacted for comment.
