End of an era for famous local landmark

One of Bathgate’s best known landmarks is set to disappear.

The famous totem pole at Kirkton Park is now starting to rot and locals fear it could become a hazard .

The impressive structure was created in 2012 after fundraising by Friends of Kirkton Park from a tree that has been badly damaged in storms the year before.

Stuart MacDonald, chair of the group at the time said it's unlikely to be replaced.

He said: “We love the totem pole and it’s a real shame but we’re got to think about health and safety.”
