End of an era for Dun Laoghaire as beloved shop owner retires after 35 years

It's the end of an era in Dun Laoghaire as a beloved shop owner has retired after 35 years of serving the community.

John Hyland has been the man the counter in Dun Leary's Last Corner Shop for decades, serving the citizens of the seaside town with a smile in his tiny corner store on George's Street.

But John will pull the shutters down on the newsstand for the last time today, before the shop is handed over to new ownership.

And a number of locals paid their emotional tributes on social media, wishing John well in his retirement and speaking incredibly highly of the local legend.

One local said: "The end of an era. I spoke with him yesterday and he thanked me for my custom over the last 35 years. I hope the new owner is up and running before the October issues of Uncut and Mojo are out."

Another joked: "I’d a great chat with him. He said he didn’t want to retire but his family wanted him to. He said, as a parting shot, 'I’ll still be delivering papers' though."

A third said: "Always a warm welcome in Dun Laoghaire - and possibly the only shop in the vicinity that was always open on Christmas Day! Gave the youngone a free can of soda as a farewell!"

And a fourth wrote: "I loved that little shop, you could always get back issues of all the papers, a week later. When my father-in-law was in hospital I got him the Tipperary Star there every week. Have a long and great retirement."
