End of an era for Dublin city as Hogans Butchers closes doors forever after 80 years of service

An iconic Dublin store which has been a stronghold in the City for eight decades is set to close its doors.

Hogans Butchers on Wexford Street beside The Jar will shut up shop forever after 80 years of service to locals in the area.

In recent years, the butchers had been run by Christopher Hogan whose grandfather opened the store in 1939.

A third generation Hogan family butcher, Christopher had decided to retire at the age of 70.

Locals have been reminiscing about the popular store which once had big competition on that stretch of road.

One person said: "That's sad. I remember when I lived that way there were about four butchers on Wexford/Camden street. The next generation are not carrying the torch forward unfortunately."

Another added: "Ah, no! Amazing well-hung steak and Chris is a gent. Knows every customer by name. Once I didn’t have enough money and he wouldn’t let me go to the machine - he opened a ledger and wrote my name and the amount into the book and said - pay me next week. Totally gorgeous old school Dublin."

A third commented: "Best lamb chops in town. He also told me to back the draw in the first All Ireland final last year which I did. At least he's going on his own terms, Thanks Christopher."

An in-depth look at the closure of Hogans Butchers can be found in a Newstalk radio piece here entitled 'The End of the High Street Butcher'.
