End of an era for Dublin as city's ugliest building Hawkins House finally gets demolished

Dublin's ugliest building will be demolished today as the city's skyline says goodbye to Hawkins House.

Located on the corner of Tara Street and Poolbeg Street and built in 1962, the building - which stands 11 storeys tall - will be levelled on Wednesday after confirmation of original plans that were raised in the summer of 2016.

A picture of the demolition crew rolling in was posted by Mulligan's of Poolbeg Street across the road on Twitter.

They captioned it: "All go down around us this morning!"

The new building on the site of Hawkins House and Apollo House is believed to be reduced to 10 storeys and will feature more office space than its predecessor.

Speaking in 2016 when the demolition was first mentioned, Minister Sean Carney said at the time: "It is clear that Hawkins House is now obsolete and no longer meets the demand for modern flexible workspace.

"The development of this site will provide up to 60% more office space and will offer significant savings in running costs."
