End of an era as Ayrshire street is bulldozed

The demolition job follows a decision by South Ayrshire Council’s Leadership Panel back in February 2017.

The committee said the houses were unpopular and major work was needed because the flats were “riddled with dampness”.

The local authority, which also pinpointed houses in nearby Dailly Road for demolition, set aside £1.1m for the job.

Forty-four homes, including those previously identified in Dailly Road, will eventually be knocked down.

At the time of the decision, the news sparked fury among some tenants in Miller Terrace, who expressed fears over where they would be rehoused. All were offered alternative accommodation.

Ward councillor William Grant said: “The demolition of Miller Terrace and partial demolition in Dailly Road is well underway, with the Mille r Terrace site almost cleared.

“It is the end of an era in Maybole but it is very important that we provide houses that meet today’s requirements.”

He added: “The sites, when cleared, will be landscaped. Currently, the council are preparing to build social housing at Ladyland Road.”

Fellow ward councillor Iain Campbell said: “I’m sure some of the residents have happy memories of bringing up families there but the houses were beyond their lifespan.

“The saddest part is that some of the residents have had to be rehoused out of Maybole, meaning less money spent in the town.”

He added: “No firm decision has been taken on building new houses on the site.”
