End in sight for Flight of the Conchords?

Bret McKenzie, left, and Jemaine Clement. McKenzie said the pair may only make 10 more episodes of Flight of the Conchords

Is Flight of the Conchords about to be grounded? Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie have suggested the second series of the hit HBO series will be the last. Shame - but maybe it's for the best.

The sitcom adventures of the spoof band - "Formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo" - was the freshest new TV comedy since The Office.

But, like the creators of The Office, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the Kiwi pair may decide quit at the top and bow out after the second 10-part series.

"We've got a lot of half-songs. We've got an album's worth of beginnings of songs," Clement told Q magazine.

McKenzie added: "The second series seems to me like it would be a good end to the show. I feel like another 10... that will be enough."

The opening half dozen episodes of the first series were a constant delight.

I thought it dipped halfway through - don't even get me started on the Lord of the Rings episode, which didn't nuke the fridge but did start a small fire in the freezer compartment - before returning to form by the series' end.

It's the songs that lift the episodes from the very good to the simply brilliant. Particular favourites? Business Time, Inner City Pressure, Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros, and Most Beautiful Girl In The Room, probably.

But instead of repeating a fresh format until it goes stale, it looks like the pair will bow out after 22 episodes - rather more, in fact, than the 14 clocked up by The Office in its two-part run. Oh, plus the Christmas specials.

Maybe they could team up with Adam and Joe - no strangers to spoof songs themselves - and create a supergroup. Or maybe I should go and have a lie down.

"Aww yeah. That's right baby. Girl, tonight we're gonna make love. You know how I know, baby? Cause it's Wednesday..."
