Encrochat dealers jailed before Christmas, 'gut reaction' led to girl's diagnosis and 7 Omicron symptoms

Good morning, these are the latest ECHO headlines today.

EncroChat drug dealers who won't be home for Christmas

A number of EncroChat dealers have been jailed in December as police continue to dismantle gangs across Merseyside.

Police continue to target criminals using encrypted mobile devices to sell drugs across Merseyside and the UK.

Commonly referred to as EncroChat, criminals have used the system to adopt and hide behind code names.

Around 60,000 users of EncroChat have been identified worldwide, with about 10,000 of them in the UK – all involved in coordinating and planning the supply and distribution of drugs and weapons, money laundering and other criminal activity.

This month at least 20 dealers have been locked up after appearing at Liverpool Crown Court.

Here are all the EncroChat cases The ECHO has covered in December.

Doctor's 'gut reaction' after girl, 10, told she just needed an ice pack

A young girl was diagnosed with a life-threatening and rare form of cancer after her Labrador puppy jumped on her legs.

The Aigburth schoolgirl and her parents, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine scientists Lisa Reimer and Eddie Thomsen, were at home on May 1 this year when a seemingly innocuous incident led to a worrying discovery.

Lisa told the ECHO: "What happened was our dog, which was six months old, hopped on Evelyn's lap and it hurt her, much more than it should have.

"When we looked we noticed this swelling on her calf. It looked a bit odd so we called the walk-in centre and they said just put an ice-pack on it."

After swelling didn't go down they visited the GP who urged them to go straight to the emergency department at Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

In reality the MRI revealed that the lump in Evelyn's leg had its own blood supply, a clear sign it was a large tumour.

Seven Omicron symptoms you should never ignore

As the UK Government considers further restrictions amid the spread of the new Omicron variant, experts are warning of a string of symptoms people should not ignore.

With many winter bugs also doing the rounds it can be difficult to tell the difference between a cold or this new strain.

As coronavirus infections spiral, people need to make sure their colds aren't actually covid.

The Government has never updated guidance on covid symptoms beyond the three classic symptoms (high temperature, a loss or change to smell or taste, and a new and continuous cough).

But researchers from the ZOE app - the world's largest ongoing study of Covid-19 - have identified a number of mostly mild, cold-like symptoms.

Using the most recent data from London, where Omicron prevalence is higher than other regions of the UK, ZOE data scientists analysed symptom data from positive cases recorded.
