Emre Can sympathises with Liverpool over 'extremely unfortunate' Premier League title wait

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Emre Can has expressed sympathy for former club Liverpool over their ongoing title dilemma.

With 29 games of the Premier League season played, Jurgen Klopp’s team needed just two more wins to end their 30-year wait for the crown.

However, their pursuit of glory was unexpectedly halted by the spread of coronavirus, which has resulted in sport across the globe being suspended.

Debate continues to rage over when the campaign might be completed, or indeed whether it will reach its end at all.

But Can, who made over 150 appearances for the Reds during a four-season stay on Merseyside, is hopeful his former club will be rewarded.

The Germany international also wants to see any success celebrated properly with supporters, despite the uncertainty over when mass gatherings will be permitted again.

“The situation is extremely unfortunate and bitterly straight,” the 26-year-old told German publication Bild.

“Of course the championship would be deserved if the season were to be abandoned now, but the team could not celebrate with the fans who are so longing for the title.

“I hope that the celebration would happen later in that case.”

Liverpool sat 25 points clear of second-placed Manchester City prior to football being suspended.

The Reds’ next fixture would have seen them travel to Goodison Park to take on city rivals Everton.
