Perth commuters are experiencing major peak hour traffic delays this morning after an empty Transperth passenger train crashed into an abandoned car in Perth's south-east.
The train hit the stolen Jeep parked on the train line just after 5:00am near the road and rail intersections of Albany Highway and The Crescent in Maddington.
Police said the car was stolen from the Maddington Toyota dealership last night.
They said the driver attempted to drive the car down the tracks, but got stuck and abandoned the car.
There were no passengers on board the train, and the train driver was not hurt in the crash.
Services on the Armadale train line have been cancelled so emergency services can investigate and clear the incident.
Commuters warned of delays
Transperth spokesman David Hynes said commuters who were intending to use the Armadale line should plan another route this morning.
"We would expect it would last for some hours to clear the wreck away, and then we have to restore the overhead power system so it’s going to be some hours," he told ABC Radio Perth.
"Hopefully we will be back this afternoon for the afternoon peak, but that's [yet] to be announced at this stage.
"It is going to mess up timetables and connections. You won't be there on time so you will need to leave a little bit of extra time and perhaps warn people you will be running late."
Transperth buses are running between Armadale station and Cannington, while Transperth trains will operate between Cannington and Perth.
There will be no changes to the Cannington to Thornlie line, but delays are expected.
Albany Highway is closed from Rover Avenue to The Crescent while emergency services work to clear the incident.
