Empty Sunderland hairdresser's could become new activity centre for parents and babies

A new centre could soon open in Sunderland offering classes and activities for parents and babies.

Earlier this month, plans were lodged for a ‘baby sensory’ at 21 Stockton Terrace, in the Ryhope ward.

The site was formerly a hairdressers but has remained vacant for several months.

Under new plans, the centre would operate Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, with a focus on sensory activities and development.

This ranges from instruments, baby signing and exercise to social playtime, rhymes and songs – with extra courses also offered to improve communication.

Baby Sensory Sunderland currently offers a range of mobile classes across Sunderland and Seaham.

The applicant believes the move to a permanent base will also benefit the wider area.

A statement in the application form reads: “The change of use to baby sensory centre will support the existing use on the parade by providing additional footfall to complement the existing uses and assist in the sustainability of the shopping parade.”

It goes on to say: “The use will support and compliment the existing business on the retail parade and a negative or undesirable impact is not expected.”

A decision on the plans is expected by early May.

If approved, weekday classes at the centre would accommodate up to 14 babies with their parent or carer, alongside occasional weekend parties.

The centre would also focus on babies from birth up to 13 months.
