Empty shelves in supermarkets as shoppers pack into the aisles

Shoppers were still packing into supermarkets across Lanarkshire this morning despite Government warnings against mass gatherings.

Asda Hamilton’s car park was rammed full at around 9am, with shoppers hurrying inside to fill their baskets and trolleys.

The same scene unfolded at Asda Motherwell with aisles emptying despite being filled overnight by hard-working staff.

Toilet rolls, cleaning products and now the alcohol aisles were being hit hard, with many stacking their trolleys full of beer, wine and spirts.

The queues were worse than at seasonal periods such as Christmas with many having to line down the aisles as workers worked hard to scan shopping as quickly as they could with minimal contact.

Shoppers were also being continually reminded over the loudspeaker that the shops would be having new opening times for those vulnerable to the virus.
