Empty Kilmarnock town centre shop could be transformed into restaurant

An empty shop in Kilmarnock could be transformed into a restaurant if plans get the go-ahead.

A firm has applied for permission to turn the former Topshop in Portland Street into an eaterie with a takeaway.

Sava Estates, which owns the two-storey building, has submitted proposals to create the venue on the first floor.

A supporting statement lodged with the council alongside designs said: “The proposed development will deliver a quality restaurant on this prominent location and see the change of use of this vacant unit into a vibrant and dynamic dining experience.

“Given the location on The Cross, it is important that the development animates the space and contributes to the streetscene.”

It said light from the restaurant would “engender a sense of safety and wellbeing” and more people about would contribute to the “sense of security” in the area.

No decision on the application has been made yet and the name of the restaurant has not been revealed.

Plans show a dining area, which would take up most of the floor, and takeaway among other features. An extraction flue would be erected at the back of the property and the existing doorway would be kept.

Opening hours would be Sunday to Thursday 10am to 11pm with a later close on Friday and Saturday at midnight.

The Ayrshire Roads Alliance has no objections to the bid.

It said: “The site is located within the town centre and public transport facilities. The train and bus stations are just a few minutes walk away from the site.

“Additionally, there are sufficient pay and display car parking spaces should clients prefer to use their own transport.”
