Employers 'missing out' over lack of flexibility in job ads

Employers are being accused of ignoring the huge change in the world of work caused by the pandemic by not offering flexible arrangements.

A study by Timewise suggested that almost three out of four job vacancies make no reference to flexible working possibilities, such as part-time, remote or home working.

The flexible working experts said its research among more than five million job vacancies showed that those offering flexible options have increased by just 4% from 2020.

Timewise said its research revealed a missed opportunity to recruit by employers, as most people now say they want to work flexibly.

Part-time work is offered in only 10% of job adverts, while home or remote working are only mentioned in 8% of job ads, said the report.

Timewise co-founder Emma Stewart said: “The way that employers are advertising jobs ignores the biggest shake-up of work seen in a generation. We know that candidates do not want to raise the question, but we believe they shouldn’t have to.

“In the post-pandemic, post-Brexit employment market, where vacancies far outstrip candidate supply, thousands of skilled candidates won’t move until they see that a job clearly offers flexible working from day one.

“With more than three million people still economically inactive due to caring or health reasons, employers are missing out on attracting a wider pool of talent they desperately need.”
