Becoming a more sustainable company doesn’t just involve implementing top-down initiatives – it also requires the participation of employees. For example, Domtar’s EarthChoice Ambassadors program creates opportunities for employees at all levels to make a positive impact – both inside the office and out. This month’s Q&A spotlights Tish Goldsberry, an inventory clerk at the Rock Hill Converting Center in South Carolina.

Where did you first learn to value sustainability, and how has Domtar’s EarthChoice Ambassadors programme shaped your outlook?

Sustainability has always been important to me. It was something that my family taught from the time I was little. Being a part of the EarthChoice Ambassadors programme is great because it allows me to have a personal goal as part of my job. I have had the privilege of working on many different projects and initiatives in the past couple of years – from our collaboration with First Book, which encourages reading in schools, to food and coat drives to help our communities. We have also worked with the quality department at our location on a survey with our customers to achieve one of our key performance indicators (KPIs).

Since you’ve become an EarthChoice ambassador, what achievement are you most proud of?

There are so many, but if I had to pick just one, it would be how we engage all employees and make recycling a group effort. We recycle not only in our production department, but now – thanks to employee suggestions – we have recycling centres set up all over the plant for paper, plastic, cardboard and printer cartridges.

When you think about company culture, what are some of the most important qualities?

I want to work for a company that has a positive outlook and treats their employees fairly. Domtar is definitely one of the best companies that I have worked for. We have high goals to reach in quality and safety, but they are attainable. The company also provides us with much help to reach and exceed our goals.

When it comes to sustainability, how do you measure your personal impact? What does success look like?

Every day when I see our recycling centres or someone comes up to me with an idea for our next project, that is success. Helping others to achieve their goals for sustainability is the real success.

What advice would you give to readers who are looking to pursue a more sustainable lifestyle?

Even small changes make a difference. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Find one small action you can make every day.
