The Emperor and Empress on Wednesday attended a special exhibition titled "The 30th Anniversary of the Enthronement / Cultural Exchanges of the Emperor and Empress: Sharing the Beauty of Japan" at the Tokyo National Museum in Taito Ward, Tokyo.
The exhibition is the first event launched as part of the Tsumugu Project: Promoting, Restoring and Preserving the Beauty of Japan's Art, an initiative jointly planned by the Cultural Affairs Agency, the Imperial Household Agency and The Yomiuri Shimbun.
Artwork showcased at the exhibition included byobu folding screens "Poetry and Genre Scenes from Yuki Province for Daijosai" (Grand Thanksgiving Festival after the Enthronement) painted by Kaii Higashiyama, which was displayed at the Daijosai for the Heisei era.
The Emperor and Empress also viewed "The Tale of Oguri Hangan" painted by Iwasa Matabei, which was exhibited in Britain when they visited in 1998. The couple said it brought back memories for them.
The exhibition will run through April 29.
