The Emperor will attend the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Paralympics slated for Tuesday at National Stadium, the Imperial Household Agency announced Thursday.
The Empress, however, will not be in attendance as foreign dignitaries and other guests will not be accompanied by their spouses in line with measures against the novel coronavirus. The Empress similarly did not attend the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony for that reason.
The International Paralympic Committee's regulations stipulate that the head of state make the formal declaration to open the Paralympics. The Emperor, who serves as honorary patron of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, is expected to fulfill this role.
Plans for Imperial Family members to attend some events have been shelved following the decision by organizers to hold events without spectators in principle.
