Emperor sends message of condolence on the death of Britain's Prince Philip

The Emperor, the Emperor Emeritus and the Empress Emerita have sent a message of condolence on the death of Britain's Prince Philip, who was Queen Elizabeth's husband, the Imperial Household Agency said on Monday. The prince was 99.

The Emperor met Prince Philip while studying in Britain from 1983 to 1985. When the Emperor visited Britain in May 2001, he enjoyed cruising on the River Thames at the invitation of the British royal couple and viewed a private collection of works handed down through the British royal family at Windsor Castle.

Kenji Ikeda, vice grand steward of the agency, said at a press conference on Monday that the Emperor met Prince Philip many times while studying in Britain and remembered the prince treating the Emperor warmheartedly, and that the Emperor felt sorry for the prince's death.

The Emperor Emeritus has visited Britain eight times in total, including for Queen Elizabeth's coronation ceremony in 1953, and had met with the prince as well.
