
The Emperor formally reports his April 30 abdication at the Geku outer shrine at Ise Jingu in Ise, Mie Prefecture, on Thursday. The shrine visit was an abdication-related ritual called "Jingu ni Shinetsu no Gi." Dressed in a morning coat, the Emperor walked down a path to the Shoden hall with chamberlains in front and behind carrying the sacred sword and jewel -- two of the three sacred treasures of the Imperial family. The Emperor then presented an offering of a tamagushi tree branch and bowed. The Empress followed suit.
