Emperor performs 1st rituals at Imperial Palace sanctuaries

The Emperor performed rites in his first ceremonies in relation to his succession to the throne at the Kyuchu Sanden three sanctuaries in the Imperial Palace on Wednesday.

During the Kashikodokoro-ni-Kijitsu-Hokoku-no-gi ceremony, the Emperor reported to his ancestors the date of the Sokuirei-Seiden-no-gi ceremony in October to disseminate at home and abroad the fact of his enthronement, as well as that of the Daijosai, a ceremony performed only once for each emperor, in November. The Empress also followed and bowed before the three sanctuaries.

The Emperor appeared just past 10:30 a.m. on a cloister of the Kashikodokoro sanctuary in a formal court dress traditionally worn by emperors known as korozen-no-goho. With chamberlains holding the sacred sword and the magatama beads -- proof of the Emperor's accession to the throne -- the Emperor entered the Kashikodokoro where Amaterasu Omikami is enshrined.

According to the Imperial Household Agency, the Emperor bowed before reading his statement in classical Japanese that he will hold the Sokuirei-Seiden-no-gi and Daijosai in autumn.

The Emperor then made the same report at the Koreiden, which honors the souls of successive emperors and Imperial families, and the Shinden, which enshrines myriad deities.

The Empress was in a junihitoe traditional kimono. It was the first time since December 2002 that the Empress attended all ceremonies at the three sanctuaries.
