Tens of thousands of people visited the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Saturday to celebrate the Emperor's enthronement.
The event marked the Emperor's first public greeting in his new role.
At 10 a.m., the Emperor appeared on the balcony with other Imperial family members, including the Empress, Crown Prince Akishino and his wife Crown Princess Kiko.

"I'm glad to see the people celebrate us in such a manner today, and I'm deeply grateful to you," the Emperor said in expressing his gratitude to the public.
"I wish you good health and happiness and also sincerely hope that Japan will seek world peace and accomplish further development in cooperation with other countries," he added, waving to the crowd with a smile.
The Emperor and Empress stood on the balcony with other Imperial family members six times throughout the day, once every other hour from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita did not attend the public greeting.
The Imperial Household Agency allowed the public to enter the palace 20 minutes ahead of schedule. A total of 140,000 people visited the palace.
