Emperor Emeritus, Empress Emerita to move back to Akasaka residence in April

The Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita are expected to move back into the former Akasaka Imperial Residence in Minato Ward, Tokyo, in April, the Imperial Household Agency has announced.

The Imperial couple are now living temporarily in the Sento Imperial Residence in the Takanawa district in the ward.

The former Akasaka Imperial Residence was built in 1960 as a new home for them. The current Emperor and Empress lived there from 1994 to September last year.

After the current Emperor and Empress moved to the Imperial Palace in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo, the former Akasaka Imperial Residence was renovated to improve accessibility and safety.

Once the Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita have moved back in, the residence will be renamed the Sento Imperial Residence, the appellation for the home of an emperor emeritus.
