Emotional tributes paid in 'final farewell' to Pat Smullen at The Curragh

Pat Smullen was remembered at The Curragh with poignant tributes to the legendary jockey following his death aged 43.

Horse racing bosses presented a bouquet of flowers to the late rider's wife Francis and their children Hannah, Sarah and Paddy at the famous Co Kildare racecourse where Smullen recorded many wins over the years.

Horse Racing Ireland CEO Brian Kavanagh and Curragh chairman Padraig McManus were on hand to pay their respects to the decorated rider who passed away on Tuesday after a cancer battle.

Smullen's fundraising event at the venue had proved to be a huge success - part of his charity initiative for pancreatic cancer trials that raised more than €2.5m.

AP McCoy served his apprenticeship around the same time as Smullen and was among those to pay a heartfelt tribute.

He told Sky Sports: "He was a wonderful man. It's very hard, it's very hard on the family. It's just a tragic time, it's heartbreaking.

"We served our apprenticeships around a similar time. His was a lot more successful than mine was, so I'd known him a long time.

"Paying a compliment to him as a rider, he took over from as good a rider as I have ever seen in Mick Kinane (at Dermot Weld's) and you wouldn't have known. That is how good Pat Smullen was. You can try to think about races he maybe should have won - there aren't any."

A tweet from The Curragh Racecourse official account read: "A final farewell from The Curragh Racecourse to Pat Smullen this afternoon Sincere condolences to Frances, Hannah, Paddy & Sarah and all his family & friends. Sleep well Pat We will miss you terribly."
