Emotional Sunday league tributes paid to tragic 21-year-old van driver

Heartbreaking tributes were paid to a 21-year-old football club goalkeeper who was killed in a shocking road smash last week.

Liam Clark died after the white Citroen van he was driving careered off the road as it collided with a farm vehicle - an agricultural field sprayer - in Weeford, near Birmingham.

The popular football player, who recently moved to Woolton in south Liverpool, had family connections in New Brighton and had only just become a dad since the birth of his son Rauiri two months ago.

On Sunday, more than 200 people attended North Wirral Saints' fixture who play in the Wallasey Second Division where a minute's applause was observed before the match.

Liam was the side's goalkeeper.

The tragic 21-year-old's son and girlfriend also turned up for the fixture to pay their own tributes alongside his team-mates.

Liam's kit was laid out in the middle of the pitch before the game and his pals all wore white T-shirts with his "Clarky" nicknamed emblazoned on the front.

His No.1 shirt was also pictured hanging in the team's dressing room.

Liam was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on Tuesday morning, at the junction of the A5 and Streetway Road.

Last week, his devastated family paid tribute to him.

His sister Carrieanne Clark said: "He had so much going for him amazing future with his girlfriend and his two month old son and his life gone like that.

"We are absolutely heartbroken...

"In his brief life this kind, LOYAL and generous boy became a father, creating his own little family.

"An upstanding member of society, Liam Clark overcame tremendous adversity and a very tough start due largely to his own hard work and the outstanding love and support of his foster family.

"Liam was shiny, he was happy and optimistic and treated people well.

"Leaving behind a tiny son and a young partner we cant make sense nor fathom this tragedy.

"Liam you were a star and always will shine brightly in our hearts, rest in peace big hearted guy, you made a big impact in your short life."

Officers from Staffordshire Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward, particularly those with dashcam footage of the collision.

A spokesman for the force said: "The road was closed for around three hours to allow specialist collision investigation officers to examine the scene.

"Anyone who witnessed, or has dashcam footage of the collision is asked to ring 101 quoting incident 228 of September 10."

Witnesses can also contact the force by sending an email to ciu@staffordshire.pnn.police.uk.
